Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Czentnar told Wes Duplantier of the New Haven Register that the girl who was rescued was frightened but appeared to be physically fine. He said firefighters found her on the second floor in a bedroom where she had been watching television.
The Register reports that seven people, including the 12-year-old girl, were inside the house at the time of the fire and they were assisted by next-door neighbor Anne Cosentino, who ushered them into her house.
The residents who escaped from the fire were taken to The Most Holy Trinity Church on North Colony Street where a warming shelter was set up, according to the Register, which also reported that the Spanish Community of Wallingford is coordinating donations for the family and direct donations are being accepted at the church because SCOW is not open on weekends.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
