The owners said the decision is due to "circumstances way beyond" their control.

“We will be here through the weekend and will be continuing to serve great food and drinks,” the Facebook post reads. “One of our main concerns is gift certificates that have been purchased so stop in and use them!!! This decision is due to circumstances way beyond our control.”

J. Carvers opened in March 2021 in the former home of Jake’s restaurant at 179 Center St.

“It has been our pleasure to serve our neighbors in Wallingford,” the owners posted on Facebook. “We look forward to the next chapter for the Gould family!”

J. Carvers is owned by Michael and Alice Gould, who have been “lifelong residents as well as veterans of the Wallingford business community,” according to a post on the restaurant’s website.

“Both worked at the iconic My Cousin’s Place for nearly two decades before going out on their own with John Carver’s Restaurant on North Colony Road,” the post reads. “After owning and operating Michael’s Deli in Cheshire for 16 years, they are happy to be back in the town they love.”

The restaurant’s fans were saddened by the news.

One person wrote in the comments under the Facebook post, “Definitely a major loss for the town of Wallingford. We LOVED your food and the service was exceptional! Same employees since its inception speaks volumes about the owners. Great people, and so personable and welcoming of all! Wishing you all the best and please let us know if the stars should bring you somewhere else.... We'll be there!!!

Another person wrote, “Sad to hear this. We just moved to Wallingford and one of the first places that my husband and I ate at was J Carvers. The food was delicious and the server was very nice. We would have loved to become regulars.

“We wish you the best of luck in the next chapter of your lives.”
