Wallingford, CT — A 79-year-old Wallingford woman was hospitalized after her vehicle crashed into a utility pole on South Airline Road on Sunday.

Ethel Cumnick was transported from the scene by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital where she is listed in stable condition, according to Lt. Richard Homestead.

The investigation, which is ongoing, revealed that Cumnick was traveling in a northbound direction on South Airline Road, according to Homestead.

“For an unknown reason, Cumnick’s vehicle left the roadway via the right shoulder striking the eastbound curbing fronting #134 South Airline Road,” Homestead said in a press release. “Cumnick’s vehicle continued several more feet in a northeast direction where it collided into Wallingford Electric Division Utility Pole #1275.”

The vehicle then rotated clockwise where it came to final rest facing eastbound in both the northbound and southbound travel lanes of South Airline Road.

Vehicular traffic was affected for several hours to allow the Wallingford Police Department Traffic Division to reconstruct the collision, according to Homestead.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is encouraged to call Officer James Knowlton at 203-294-2818.
