Wallingford Y Members Walk Across America

While the Wallingford Y facilities are closed, the members have stepped up to the challenge of Walking Across America!

(Sally Darrow)

While the Wallingford Family YMCA facilities are closed due to COVID-19, the Y members have stepped up to the challenge of Walking Across America ... virtually, that is. On March 23rd, the Wallingford Y launched a mobile app challenge, inviting members and the community to join together to collectively walk from Wallingford, CT to San Francisco, CA. Since then, 71 people have joined the challenge, and have not only walked the 3,017 miles to San Francisco, but have moved on to virtually visit Los Angeles, CA (431 additional miles), and are now on their way back across the country to Biscayne National Park, FL (2,837 additional miles). To date, the group has walked more than 4,610 miles, which brings them close to Dallas, TX.

Along the way, participants are updated with progress and they "visit" the sites, giving them a bit of inspiration to continue the journey, and likely giving them thoughts on where they would like to travel once the country reopens! Each time the group reaches their destination, the walk is extended to keep everyone moving. Walk Across America is just one of the mobile app challenges that the Y has created during this time, and one of many other virtual resources that have been offered to members and to the community to keep everyone active, positive, and looking forward to the time when they can gather to work out together once again.

To join this challenge, download the Wallingford Y mobile app. Stay healthy & positive!
