Woman Accused Of Fraudulent Activity, Identity Theft At Bank: Wallingford Police

Police commended the bank staff for their "vigilance in recognizing the suspicious activity and their swift actions" in notifying police.

WALLINGFORD, CT — A North Carolina woman was arrested after police said she tried to access a bank account that didn’t belong to her last Friday in Wallingford.

Officers from the Wallingford Police Department’s Patrol Division, assisted by the Crime Suppression Unit, responded around 6 p.m. on June 12 to a report of suspected fraudulent activity at M&T Bank at 809 North Colony Road, according to Capt. Michael Colavolpe.

Colavolpe said bank employees contacted police after a woman was accused of trying to access a bank account that did not belong to her.

Officers found the suspect inside the bank and initiated an investigation, according to Colavolpe.

The investigation found that the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Michelle Tobin of Wake Forest, North Carolina, was in possession of a counterfeit driver’s license and a credit card bearing the name of the victim whose account she had tried to access, according to Colavolpe.

Tobin was arrested and charged with first-degree identity theft, first-degree forgery, two counts of third-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, criminal attempt to commit second-degree larceny, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

At the time of her arrest, Colavolpe said Tobin was found to be in possession of a pipe commonly used to smoke crack cocaine.

Tobin, who Colavolpe said has numerous prior arrests in other states, was held in lieu of a $75,000 bond and appeared in Meriden Superior Court on June 15.

“The Wallingford Police Department commends the staff at M&T Bank for their vigilance in recognizing the suspicious activity and their swift actions in notifying law enforcement,” Colavolpe wrote in a news release. “Their attentiveness and cooperation were instrumental in bringing this investigation to a successful resolution.”
