Waterford Seeks Full-Time Assistant Fire Chief

Waterford is accepting applications for a full-time assistant fire chief position until the vacancy is filled.

WATERFORD, CT — The Town of Waterford is accepting applications for a full-time assistant fire chief to assist in the administration, training and emergency operations of the town's fire service. The position includes benefits and will remain open until filled.

According to the job posting, applications must be submitted to the Human Resources Office at Waterford Town Hall.

The assistant fire chief reports to the director of fire services and is responsible for supporting the department's training programs, emergency response operations and administrative functions. Duties include responding to multi-alarm fires, hazardous materials incidents, mass casualty events, technical rescues and confined space emergencies, as directed by the fire services director.

The position also assists with preparing and administering the department budget, supervising personnel, maintaining training and certification records, overseeing building pre-planning, participating in fire prevention and suppression program evaluations, coordinating disaster response exercises and joint training, and serving as chair of the department's Health and Safety Committee.

Additional responsibilities include assisting with equipment purchasing, maintaining relationships with volunteer and career firefighters and local, county and state agencies, participating in employee evaluations and investigations, handling personnel matters, and attending meetings, conferences and training programs.

According to the posting, the position generally follows a Monday through Friday schedule but requires weekend work for training activities, on-call responsibilities and attendance at emergency incidents as directed by the fire services director.

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in fire technology and administration or a related field and at least eight years of fire service or municipal government experience, including command and training responsibilities. At least five years of supervisory or administrative experience is required.

Candidates also must hold Fire Officer I and Fire Instructor I certifications and obtain Fire Officer II and Fire Instructor II certifications within three years. A Fire Service Safety Officer certification, or the ability to obtain one within a year, is also required. Applicants must possess a valid Connecticut driver's license with a Q endorsement. The town said an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
