Animal Control Officer Shares Emotional Announcement In Waterford-East Lyme

WATERFORD, CT — Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk will step down Sept. 1 after 38 years in public safety, including the past 16 years working in animal control.

Yuchniuk announced his resignation in a Facebook post, saying he is leaving as he continues treatment for cancer.

Yuchniuk said he was diagnosed with stage 4b metastatic prostate cancer two years ago and underwent chemotherapy and other treatment before the cancer went into remission. He said the cancer has since returned and spread to his bones and lymph nodes.

"While I have started targeted radiation therapy and continue to fight this fight, I have decided that my quality time remaining is best spent enjoying life with my family," Yuchniuk wrote.

Yuchniuk spent 28 years as a police officer, including his final six years working as an animal control officer, followed by another 10 years as a civilian animal control officer.

He said the Waterford-East Lyme program grew during his tenure from one part-time officer paid per call to two full-time officers providing coverage seven days a week and remaining on call around the clock.

Yuchniuk also highlighted the program's community donations, veterinary medical funds and live release rate, which he said has consistently exceeded 95%.

"It has been my privilege and honor to serve as your Animal Control Officer," Yuchniuk wrote. "I will miss this job and the animals."

Assistant Animal Control Officer Allison Ryan will take over the animal control officer position, according to Yuchniuk. The town plans to hire another employee.

Yuchniuk thanked Ryan, his wife, local police departments, fellow animal control officers and residents who have supported the program.

"Most of all I will miss the satisfaction of making a small difference in the lives of these animals," he wrote.
