Be Aware Of Fake Solicitors: Waterford Police

Waterford police remind residents that anyone soliciting door to door in town needs to acquire a Solicitor Permit through the department.

WATERFORD, CT — Waterford police remind residents that anyone soliciting door to door in town needs to acquire a Solicitor Permit through the department, a protocol put in place to keep residents safe from thefts and other crimes committed by fake solicitors.

Police said on Facebook that anyone soliciting should be wearing a badge issued by the department. The badge should have a photograph of the person along with their name, company and the permit's date of expiration.

According to police, the badge is signed by Chief Brett Mahoney and has a photograph of the Town of Waterford seal and the Waterford Police Department patch.

"If a person soliciting does not have an identification badge please contact the police," police said on Facebook. "We have established this protocol to ensure that background checks have been done on solicitors in our town, as we have had thefts and other crimes committed over the past several years with fake solicitors, especially targeting the senior population."

Police said the protocol is a way to ensure the department knows who the solicitor is and that they are safe to come to residents' doors.
