Phone Scam Alert
Phone scam received in the Town of Waterford, validated by the Police Department.

The Waterford Police Department has received a complaint from a Waterford resident about a scam phone call. The caller told the resident he had been selected to receive a federal grant of 7000.00, US Grant Dept grant NAN0207. They wanted his banking information so they could make a direct deposit. While the caller was giving him the rehearsed information, the resident kept interrupting and asking questions. The caller was getting annoyed, and gave him a number, 315-567-4631 for her "supervisor" that he could call to verify the grant later. The resident called the number while on the phone with the caller and it went to a voicemail.
The Waterford Police Department called the number 315-567-4631 and got a male who sounded like he was in a call center. We asked for confirmation of a grant he yelled at the Officer that it was his cell phone and never call him again. The Police could hear phones ringing and lots of people talking like it was a call center. A check of some scam sites shows that this is a known nationwide scam, and that callers should hang up.
This particular scam does not target the elderly as previous recent scams have done. Please call the Waterford Police at 860-442-9451, or email through the Waterford Police Department website @ www.waterfordpolice.org with any "new" scams you may receive so we can advise the community.
