The Lesson of the Tree
What do trees teach us? You have a choice.....Flex for yourself. Flex for your children. Because if we don't bend we B R E A K.

A tree represents many things, is represented by many visuals, and means a lot of things to almost everyone. People plant trees, climb trees, cut down trees, shape trees, write about trees, paint trees, and draw trees.
This past week I was made aware of a Dog Safety Program for kids called “Be A Tree” and essentially teaches children to be calm, stand still, and allow dogs to sniff you. The lesson is very important as the weather warms up and everyone starts to play outside again, check it out here.
As the temperatures rise I can’t wait to see the browns of winter turn to shades of red as the trees bud and then one day our trees turn the world green again. I know there is a lot more contemplating to do there but that may be for another day.

In the past, I was told to be a Willow Tree and not an Oak Tree. At the time I heard the words but was not really listening or ready to apply the lesson. Why? Because I was on a path to being an Oak tree because Oak trees are strong and stubborn. Yet even then I loved thinking about the strength and size that comes out of it a little acorn. The oak tree is another mystery of nature and a reminder for everyone to not “judge a book by its cover” because you never know what talent every one of us has hidden inside.
Yet for me as a father and provider I am learning that the Willow is the true inspiration. Think about it. Children test our flexibility.

If we don’t flex we B R E A K!
Each day, each tantrum, each test brings with it the challenge of how we as the adults are going to respond. Are you flexible enough to bend and respond when the storms blow through, or do you snap? In the classroom, do you flex to teach children the appropriate way to respond to misplaced anger? When the angry winds blow through can you allow them to blow by or do you stand tall for the sake of standing strong and risk the break? I learned, there is always going to be a storm that is stronger than the mighty Oak that will snap it to its core.
Flex for yourself. Flex for your children. Dance with the wind and play until you are the supportive parent and provider our children need us to be in their lives.
Be a Willow and bend to see another day.

About Brian
Who am I and what do I do?
I am the father of three children, husband to a very special woman, and work as a Social entrepeneur supporting children with disabilities, the families who love them, and professionals who serve them.
I was born and raised in Southeastern CT (Hanover to be exact). Went to Hofstra University and graduated with an interest in developmental psychology. After interning and becoming a certified Special Education teacher. For ten years I worked as a special education teacher, district behavior consultant, and assistive technology coordinator. The work was rewarding yet I always believed I could have a positive impact on more than 5-10 families a year.
In July of 2009 I left teaching to create a better life for my family and reach for my dream to be an effective positive influence on familes, school districts, and service providers across the region.
Early in 2009 Synergy Center was created, followed by Sensations Charitable Foundation as vehicles to support families with social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Since their creation we have made a positive difference in the lives of more than 150 families, teachers, and service providers.
Working with Patch is an opportunity to continue our work and connect people to information and services their families need to be their best, yet may not find in through typical channels. As I say to people who either help our cause or come to us for support - Let's Play!
