Unusual investment of $50 yields huge 50.50 carat emerald

Libby and Kevin Barrieault paid $25 per head to participate in a gem dig with the
Mountain Area Gem and Mineral Association (also known as Magma).  The group recently took a trip to Jamie Hill’s North American Emerald Mine in Hiddenite, North Carolina.  The Barrieault’s were only in the mine for a few minutes when Kevin came across a 50.50 carat rough emerald.  This gem is estimated to be worth about $10,000.  The couple is trying to decide whether to have the gem cut for themselves or to sell the rough crystal as is.

Hill decided to allow the public in to the mine for a price due to the fact that he hadn’t had a major find from the mine in years and the Magma group had been quite persistent.  He figured recreational miners could enjoy themselves and it could benefit both parties.  The Barrieaults can vouch for that!

That's all for now.
