Lawmakers Speak about Legislative Process, Duties and Issues

GROTON – The 11:00 a.m. bell rang at Ella T. Grasso Technical High School on Tuesday morning yet none of the Hospitality, Tourism and Guest Services Management students stirred from their desks. Instead, one bright young student raised her hand and asked, “Did you always know that you wanted to be a state legislator?” State Reps. Kathleen McCarty (R-38) and Aundré Bumgardner (R-41) took turns answering this question, as well as several others, during their visit to discuss the legislative process, important issues affecting Connecticut’s youth – like reducing testing, and what their job in Hartford entails.

The legislators explained the importance of the careful, creative process that occurs in the House and Senate chambers at the Capitol, which committees they serve on, how bills become law, and the impact all of this has on their communities.

“With a great deal of hard work and perseverance, the decisions I made throughout my career led me to become a state representative, of which I am very proud. So as such I aim to take advantage of each term I serve to accomplish as much as I can for my constituents,” said Rep. McCarty. “That brings me to share what I enjoy most about serving in this position: helping others. Knowing that a bill that I sponsored or co-sponsored is passed into law and will benefit the lives of countless Connecticut residents for me is the highest reward. I therefore encourage you all to never give up. Never give up. You all can accomplish anything you set your minds to, and have great potential to make a difference in the community in your future.”

“I agree,” added Rep. Bumgardner, the youngest member of the Connecticut General Assembly at age 21. “No matter where you’re from, or what obstacles you face, you are the future. Do what works for you and reach for your dreams.” Noting that the majority of students in the class were in fact female, Bumgardner highlighted the particularly important role they will play as next generation of small and large business owners, or even community leaders. “If there’s anything we can do for you, we want to hear from you. Tourism and Hospitality is one of the most vital functions of our local economy and serves an essential role in our state’s economic growth. We plan to protect your opportunities for employment in this area, and represent your rights as students this legislative session.”

Rep. McCarty represents the 38th district of Waterford and Montville.
Rep. Bumgardner represents the 41st district of Groton and New London.
