Craigslist Safety Zone Established at Waterford Police Department

If you're planning on buying or selling on Craigslist, police hope people will use the lobby or front parking lot as a safe place to meet.

The Waterford Police Department established a Craigslist safety zone and is asking for the public’s help in spreading ‘the word about the new service.

“Many of us use Craigslist to buy and sell items,” police said via Facebook. “Many of us have also heard horrific stories of people hurt in Craigslist sales. Far more commonly, items are sold that the purchaser may fear is stolen or just don’t feel right about the sale.”

Waterford police want to ensure that Waterford residents are comfortable with sales or purchases.

“To do this we are offering either the lobby or the front parking lot of the police department, to conduct your transaction,” they said. “These areas are constantly monitored by video, and we save our security camera recordings for 30 days. Most people that want to conduct a potentially ’shady’ business transaction are not going to do so at the local police department, and certainly not on video recording their face and vehicle.”

Police said they will not take part in the transaction but said anyone may check to see if an item is stolen by visiting the Trace website, a database of stolen items.
