CT's Property Tax Rank Among Worst In Country

A new study by WalletHub does not bear good news for property owners.

While there are many things to love about the Nutmeg state, it's not getting any cheaper to live here. Connecticut ranks 48th in the country in real-estate property taxes, according to a recent study by WalletHub. The state also ranks poorly in vehicle property taxes at 48th as well.

Each year, the average American household spends $2,375 on real-estate property taxes plus another $441 for residents of the 27 states with vehicle property taxes.

In Connecticut, the median home is valued at $272,700, with $5,746 in property taxes.

With such high costs, it’s no surprise that more than $14 billion in property taxes across the country go unpaid each year, according to the National Tax Lien Association.

If you're looking to avoid property taxes — and winter — why not move to Hawaii? The state ranked number one in the study, with residents only paying $1,607 on a $587,700 home, the median property value in the state.

Round out the top five were Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, and Washington, D.C.

Joining Connecticut in the bottom five were Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Illinois, and — in dead last — New Jersey.

The cost of property taxes is one that affects all residents.

"And though property taxes might appear to be a non-issue for the 36 percent of renter households," the article reads, "that couldn’t be further from the truth. We all pay property taxes, whether directly or indirectly, as they impact the rent we pay as well as the finances of state and local governments."
