“Harvest to Hearth: Autumn in 1850’s Waterford" Sept. 10

Recipes like brandied peaches, dried peas, apple rounds, and pumpkin leather bring to mind harvest times of old when autumn's bounty was preserved for the long winter months ahead. On Saturday, September 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Waterford Historical Society opens its historic buildings on Jordan Green for tours and a troupe of living historians will present “Harvest to Hearth: Autumn in 1850s Waterford.” The event is free, family-friendly and open to the public.

The Waterford Historical Society has again asked the Dirty Blue Shirts to present museum-quality activities, so living history presentations by the costumed historians will include “Unending Bounty: Preserving the Harvest,” “Creature Comforts: Quilting Circle,” and “Pumpkin Sweet: The Heirloom Apples of Our Past.” Learn more: dirtyblueshirts.com

Visitors can also observe blacksmithing demonstrations by a professional guest blacksmith at the Ralph Madara Blacksmith Shop, accessed by crossing the foot bridge from Jordan Green and walking up the hill past the Stacy Barn.

Parking is free at the parking lot on Avery Lane, which is handicap accessible, and at the nearby Waterford Public Library or the Waterford Community Center, a short walk away.
