Holocaust Survivor, 91, Dies In CT Car Crash

Police said a 91-year old Holocaust survivor well-known across the state was killed after her vehicle crashed into a tree.

COLCHESTER, CT - A well-known 91-year old Holocaust survivor was killed after her vehicle crashed into a tree Tuesday, according to media reports.

Henny Simon died near her home on Parum Road in Colchester around 3 p.m., NBC Connecticut reported. State police said she swerved onto the wrong side of the street near Dutton Road and crashed into the shoulder before striking a tree. Responding emergency crews had to extract Simon from the vehicle, according to NBC Connecticut. It is not clear what made her swerve, however police are currently investigating the situation.

Simon was imprisoned as a teen in Nazi concentration camps in both Poland and Latvia, the Norwich Bulletin reported. She has spent many years since recounting her life story for audiences, regaling tales of grace amid unspeakable horror.

She came to the United States after World War II ended, where she was reunited with her father, Eyewitness News 3 reported. He had received a visa to go to China early in the war, while her mother died in captivity.

Simon attended a number of speaking engagements earlier this year, according to the Norwich Bulletin. The 91-year old survivor spoke messages of love, understanding and forgiveness to audiences of people young and old, while also speaking out against bullying.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at Ahavath Achim synagogue in Colchester, as reported by the New Haven Register. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact state police immediately.
