Obituary: Augustus J. Vacaro Jr., 86, of Waterford

He was a proud teacher and retiree of the Groton Public Schools, serving his students for over 37 years.

Augustus J. Vacaro Jr., 86, of 1 Beechwood Drive, Waterford, CT. formerly of Ledyard CT, passed away on Tuesday November 15, 2016 after a prolonged illness.

He was the son of Augustus J. And Eleanor Ferrarini Vacaro Sr. of Somerville, Mass., and was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lorraine Vacaro in February of 2015.

He was a graduate of Northeastern University and received bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Northeastern University. He was inducted into the Northeastern University's Hall of Fame for his role as pitcher. He was a proud teacher and retiree of the Groton Public Schools serving his students for over 37 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He was inducted into the Groton Educators Hall of Fame in 2004. He was a lifetime member and past treasurer of the Groton Sportsmen's Club, as well as a former member of The Knights of Columbus. He was an avid lover of nature, amateur birder, voracious reader, crossword puzzler, skeet shooter, sportsman, fan of the UCONN Women's basketball team and loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by his son Augustus J. Vacaro III and his wife Cynthia of Newtown, CT. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Alexa Vacaro of Stamford, CT and Erica Gale and her husband Christopher Gale of Ambler, PA. He is also survived by his grandson Anthony Vacaro of Macungie, PA. He is also survived by his daughter Alicia Multer and her husband Jordan , of Holliston, MA., as well as their children Lauren Multer and Joshua Multer of Brooklyn , New York. He is further survived by his daughter Andrea Stevenson and her husband Kevin, of New London, CT and their son, Liam Stevenson, also of New London. He is survived by niece Nancy Ela of Everett, Mass., and nephew Frank Hoenig of Wakefield, Mass., and many others. He was predeceased by his brother Albert Vacaro of Lynnfield Mass. and his sister, Mary Mullaly of Woburn, Mass.

The family would like to thank the staff at Atria Crossroads for their loving care as well as Dawn McDermott and the wonderful staff at Center for Hospice Care of Norwich, Connecticut.

There are no calling hours. A funeral mass is being held Saturday November 19, 11 am at Saint Paul's Church on Rope Ferry Road in Waterford.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to Center for Hospice Care 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT.
