Ocean Beach Volleyball Tournament Monumental Success

Event Raises $18,000 for Make-A-Wish Connecticut

Sunday, June 5th didn’t have the brightest sunshine or the warmest temperature, but that didn’t stop hundreds of people from flocking to Ocean Beach for a day in the sand to support Make-A-Wish.

The annual Volleyball Tournament saw over 300 players on the sandy courts, unfazed by the gloomy weather. Over 100 wish family members came to enjoy the beach and cheer on the players.

Local 16-year-old and quarter finalist on the hit television singing show “The Voice” Braiden Sunshine kicked off the day with his rendition of the National Anthem. Then the players were sent to their respective courts and let their volleyball talents loose on the world. Music and prizes were peppered throughout the day to give the players a rest.

"It wasn't the prettiest day for hanging out at the beach, yet almost 500 people representing 44 teams, family and volunteers came down to Ocean Beach Park to play volleyball and support Make-A-Wish of Connecticut on Sunday June 5th. It obviously wasn't about working on the suntan. Thanks to all the participants, volunteers, sponsors, and donors, we were able to raise over $18,000 to help grant a few wishes,” said Tom Bombria, event coordinator.

The truly impressive turnout, in spite of the weather, will help to grant almost two additional wishes. As Make-A-Wish celebrates its 30th year, the Connecticut chapter is looking at granting a record-breaking 240 wishes this year. The success of this event will help the chapter achieve this accomplishment.
