Warerford Police say that access to security camera footage from residents has helped them solve what they first thought was a crime.

WATERFORD, CT — After two recent incidents where video supplied by residents helped police during investigations, authorities are now asking people who have home security cameras to work with them.

"Do you have one of these on your home or business in town? If you have followed us on Facebook for a while then you know that we are on the Ring Neighbors app and can and will communicate through the app to request videos in certain areas. Of course if you chose to share is up to you but we hope that you will if you get a request through the app," police wrote on Facebook.

Waterford Police explained that they recently had "two incidents, one in a neighborhood off of Vauxhall Street and one in a neighborhood off Great Neck Road in which these cameras were able to assist us in tracking people down. Although initially thought to be a criminal acts, once investigated further with the help of the video footage, we were able to learn it wasn’t quite as first thought."

Police say the Ring Neighbors App is a tool that can connect the community adding that many doorbell-type security cameras work with the app.

"Working together to keep our community safe is nothing new, but having access to these videos is and have already proven to be quite valuable."

The app, Ring says, can be used to connect the community during disasters, when searching for the lost, and as part of neighborhood watch efforts to address crime.
