Sen. Maynard May Have Been Driving in the Wrong Lane Prior to Car Accident: Report

Initially, it was reported it was a single car accident, but then it was changed to a two-car accident, and now more details are surfacing.

State Sen. Andrew Maynard according to initial reports Thursday evening was involved in a one-car accident on Route 32 in Waterford on his way home from the State Capitol in Hartford.

On Friday, the story changed once Waterford police said the accident involved two cars.

And now the New London Day in an interview with the husband of the driver involved in the accident claims that Maynard was swerving all over the road, and may have been traveling in the wrong lane at the time of the accident.

Waterford police confirmed to the Day that they are investigating that possibility that Maynard’s car was driving in the wrong lane.

What we do know is that Maynard, of Stonington, and Laury Benjamin-Scelfo of Uncasville, got into a motor vehicle accident at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Maynard’s car was badly damaged and ended up down an embankment and he was taken to an area hospital.

Benjamin-Scelfo’s vehicle was totalled, the Day reports and she has reported shoulder and neck pain.

Maynard has also hired prominent personal injury attorney, Robert Reardon, of New London to handle his case.

Waterford police are continuing to investigate.

Maynard, a Democrat, who represents, Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Plainfield, Preston, Sterling, Stonington and Voluntown, was seriously injured in a fall in his home in July 2014 and has been undergoing physical therapy since.

Maynard is chairman of the General Assembly’s Transportation Committee, and is the Senate’s Deputy Majority Leader.
