A Visit with Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker
Free performance by Tammy Denease will be hosted by the Hempsted Houses' youth group on July 31.

Elizabeth Keckly, an enslaved woman who bought her freedom and became a sought-after Washington dressmaker, will be portrayed at the Hempsted Houses by performing artist Tammy Denease this Friday, July 31.
The performance starts at 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It will be hosted by the site’s youth group and geared to kids. The Chester Kitchings Family Foundation is sponsoring the event.
Tammy Denease (http://historicalfirsts.org), known nationally for her powerful portrays of African-American women, will introduce the audience to Keckly’s world and her remarkable life story.

By 1860 Keckly had become a sought-after dressmaker for the Washington elite. Her creations included the above gown, one of many made for Mary Todd Lincoln.
