Waterford Firefighter Wants 30 Years' Volunteer Pay
A firefighter has filed a claim with the state Department of Labor seeking pay for 30 years of volunteer hours.
WATERFORD, CT - A firefighter has filed a claim with the state Department of Labor seeking payment for three decades' worth of volunteer hours, according to The New London Day. The firefighter, Kevin Ziolkovski, cited violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act in his claim, a law which bars municipal employees from performing volunteer hours for the same entity that employs them.
Several towns in the state have used employed firefighters as volunteers, though this practice has recently come under scrutiny. Waterford and Montville officials recently told firefighters that they can't be both part-timers and volunteers in the same firehouse.
