Waterford Girls Show No Mercy

Waterford All-Stars 13/14 Softball Team Advances to the State Championships

It might be called “softball” but the 13- and 14-year-old girls on the Waterford All-Stars played hardball against East Haddam to win the Junior League Section 2 Championship on July 22. The team thumped East Haddam in five innings to win by a whopping 17 to 2.

The final score won’t come as a big surprise to anyone who’s been following this team, however.  “We’ve had a lot of ‘mercies,’ ” says Coach Darlene Goldstein. Although Goldstein says she feels the team’s biggest strength is its hitting, she hesitates to single out any one player for glory in the latest game.

“Honestly, I think it was a team effort,” says Goldstein. “They all gave a little bit through different parts of the game.”

Waterford All-Stars 13/14 now advances to the State Championship, which beings July 29. That won’t be new territory for many of the Waterford South girls on this team, however. A number of them played for the All-Stars last year and made it all the way to the East Region Championship. Can they do it again? If they keep playing like this, they should!
