Waterford To Hire 2 More Traffic Safety Officers

The town will have a total of three traffic officers in part to "increase our presence in high accident areas of town," police said.

WATERFORD, CT — The Waterford Police Department will hire two additional full-time traffic officers, according to a Facebook post from the department.

"If you watch or read any news in Connecticut, you know traffic safety is a serious concern," the post reads.

For many years, the department had a single full-time traffic officer who had a host of administrative tasks that didn't allow for much traffic enforcement.

"We would task patrol with traffic assignments, which is great, but removed them from key patrol tactics that attempt to reduce or deter crime," the post reads.

The addition of two more full-time officers is intended to create a "true traffic unit, to better respond to traffic concerns, increase our presence in high accident areas of town and of course, try to gain compliance with speeding, impaired driving, cell phone use and other dangerous moving violations."
