Waterford Lancer Fencers Took Home Four Medals at the East Lyme Winter Classic Tournament

December 5, 2015. The Waterford Lancer fencing team competed at the East Lyme Winter Classic tournament on Saturday December 5th bringing home four medals. Over 100 hundred fencers competed at the tournament from eastern Connecticut representing schools from East Lyme, Waterford, Fitch, Norwich Free Academy, Bacon Academy, St . Bernards, New London, Ledyard and the Sword in the Scroll fencing club.

Awards were presented in each event to the top four fencers. Waterford won four medals out of a possible sixteen and tied with Norwich Free Academy. Lancer fencer Sabrina Rutchick brought home first place in girls epee, a first for Waterford since epee was added as an event. Samantha Teel won third place in girls epee while Adrian Olivero and Jason Huang tied for third in boys foil.

The tournament format had individual events for boys foil, boys epee, girls foil and girls epee. An individual tournament begins with a round of pools consisting of 6-7 fencers who fence everyone in their pool. When all the pools have completed the results are tallied and a seeding list is created for the next rounds of direct eliminations. During direct elimination, the fencer continues to the succeeding rounds until they are defeated or win the event.
“The East Lyme tournament is a great way to start the fencing season getting the team back into competitive frame of mind before the regular ECC schedule begins.” as Coach Mason explained, “All in all, I’m pleased with the tremendous effort and determination the medalist demonstrated. The direct elimination rounds are a true test of a fencers stamina and desire to win.”
