Waterford Library To Host Tibetan Buddhist Art Film And Talk Nov. 7

Anthropologist Ming Xue will discuss traditional Tibetan paintings after a documentary screening at the library.

Waterford Public Library will host a documentary screening and talk about Tibetan Buddhist art on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 3 to 4 p.m., according to its event listing. The in-person program, “Making Buddhist Images in the Modern World: Stories from Tibet,” is for adults and will take place in the library's Meeting Room.

The program features anthropologist Ming Xue and focuses on traditional Tibetan Buddhist paintings known as thangkas. It begins with the 26-minute documentary “A Woman Who Paints Thangkas” (2019), which follows the first Tibetan woman to run her own studio and train male and female apprentices in the region, according to the library.

A presentation and discussion will follow, drawing from Xue's 2025 book, “Painting Thangkas on the Tibetan Plateau.” Xue holds a doctorate in anthropology from UCLA and is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Readers can view the program details on the library's event page.
