Waterford Man Charged With Faking Attempted Robbery: Reports

A Waterford man is accused of faking a robbery in which he shot himself, according to reports.

WATERFORD, CT — A 69-year-old Waterford man is facing charges that he staged an attempted robbery in Arlington, Virginia in which he shot himself, FOX 61 reported.

The Arlington County Police Department responded to a report of a shooting Feb. 15. Chester Dunican initially told police he was putting items in his car when a man wearing a ski mask demanded his wallet and shot him.

However, police found inconsistencies between his story and the evidence recovered, according to FOX 61. Dunican was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital Monday, when he was arrested.

He was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm in public, and making a false police report.

Dunican was previously accused of leaving more than 27,000 tons of waste on a property off Route 90 in Warren, Maine and had pleaded guilty to defrauding a Native American tribe, according to the Courier-Gazette. The alleged fake robbery attempt occurred two weeks before he was scheduled to be sentenced for committing wire fraud, when he could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison.
