Each year, around holiday season, the Waterford Police Department puts additional officers on the road for "Holiday Patrols."

The officers are tasked with getting out of their cars, walking through businesses and banks, touching base with the staff and ultimately having a greater presence in busy retail and banking areas.

So when you think you see an officer shopping on the clock and call the Chief to demand accountability, this is the reasoning:

-People seem to steal everything. Many steal at stores in Waterford, so having officers walking the stores creates a greater deterrent. Maybe, just maybe, those with bad intentions have thier plans spoiled.

-Some shoppers don't feel safe, due to the insane organized retail theft videos online and all the other horrendous things happening in the world. Hopefully, observing our officers in these busy locations, helps create a better sense of safety for those shopping in our town.

-Staff at these stores deal with a lot. Dealing with the holiday shopping public can be...lets say...challenging. We check in with them to get a pulse on what is going on and see if there are ways we can assist to make things more safe.

-Finally, we get our steps in! Oh, and maybe we spot that item we will purchase after shift too.

Win-Win-Win. Let the holiday season begin!
