WATERFORDrama presents a modern adaptation of “The Crucible,” featuring students and teachers

Waterford High School theatre troupe presents updated version of Arthur Miller's timeless play.

WATERFORDrama, the drama program at Waterford High School, will continue its 13th season with a modern day version of The Crucible taking the stage Thursday, January 26 through Saturday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Fear, intolerance, and hysteria are themes prominently featured in The Crucible and are seen far too often in today’s society. Although the play is centered on the 1692 witch hunts in Salem, Massachusetts, WATERFORDrama realizes that this story is still incredibly relevant today. The show will maintain Arthur Miller’s original dialogue but will be set in modern day including updated sets, costumes and props. These changes will create a classic story with a modern day twist.

“So much of our world today, particularly recent politics, is centered around fear and intolerance. Though the show is 325 years old, metaphorical witch hunts, finger pointing and fear are still happening today,” explains Shane Valle, the show’s director. “I directed The Crucible here at Waterford High nine years ago and wanted to do it again but also make it different. Everyone involved realizes how relevant these themes are and we welcome the opportunity to be a part of this important social discourse.”
