WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford voters planning to cast absentee ballots in the 2026 election can apply without providing a reason or excuse under a recently enacted state law.
West Hartford voters planning to cast absentee ballots in the upcoming election are being encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible to allow enough time to receive and return their ballots.
Absentee ballot applications may be submitted immediately, according to information from the West Hartford Town Clerk's Office.

Applications must contain the applicant's original signature. Completed applications and voted ballots may be placed in the town's election drop boxes or returned by mail.

- Election drop boxes: Located at the main entrance to West Hartford Town Hall and at the Faxon Branch Library.
- Applications: The town recommends using the election drop boxes to expedite delivery.
- Returned ballots: Completed absentee ballots can also be placed in the election drop boxes.
- Mail: Voters using the U.S. Postal Service should allow enough time for their ballot to reach the Town Clerk's Office.
- Deadline: All voted absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

The town also offers permanent absentee ballot status for certain voters with permanent disabilities.
To qualify, a voter must submit an absentee ballot application along with certification from a primary care provider stating that the voter has a permanent disability and cannot appear in person at the polling place. The provider's certification should be on letterhead.
Voters granted permanent absentee status receive an absentee ballot for each election, primary, and referendum in West Hartford for which they are eligible to vote.
Each January, the Registrars of Voters send a notice to voters with permanent absentee status to confirm they continue to live at the address listed on their application.
A voter who does not respond will lose permanent absentee ballot status but will remain registered to vote.
