Learn To Fish At Free Family Program Hosted By The State In West Hartford

Free fishing lessons, gear, and coaching will be offered May 5 at McGovern Pond in West Hartford; registration required.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A free, family-friendly fishing program hosted by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is scheduled for May 5 in West Hartford, offering beginner anglers hands-on instruction and equipment.

The event, part of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s “Fish with CARE” program, will take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at McGovern Pond, located within Spicebush Swamp Park, 173 Mountain Road.

Organizers said the program will include loaner fishing tackle, bait, and guidance from staff and certified volunteer coaches.

It is designed for beginners as well as those looking to refresh their fishing skills.

The event is open to adults and families with children ages 6 and older.

Youth ages 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants 16 and older are required to have a valid Connecticut fishing license.

Space is limited, and advance registration is required through the state’s online portal.
