Hate Mowing? West Hartford Program Will Make You Feel Better About That

A May 13 program at Noah Webster Library will help West Hartford residents create more sustainable landscapes (and avoid mowing).

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The Sustainable West Hartford Commission and the Noah Webster Library will host a program focused on sustainable landscaping and native planting next week.

It will take place on Wednesday, May 13, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Noah Webster Library, 20 S. Main St.

The event, titled “Less Lawn, More Life,” is inspired by Doug Tallamy’s Homegrown National Park initiative, which encourages residents to replace traditional lawns with native plants that support local ecosystems and biodiversity.

Participants will assess their own properties through a “Wild Score” exercise designed to identify ecological features and opportunities to add native species while removing invasive plants.

Organizers said the program also will introduce a 12-week climate action challenge aimed at helping residents take incremental environmental steps at home.

The program will be led by Suzanne Sayers, a garden designer and certified Master Gardener focused on sustainable landscape practices.

Registration is required.

The event is open to residents of West Hartford and surrounding communities.
