WEST HARTFORD, CT — Playhouse on Park in West Hartford will host the Hartford Jewish Playwriting Contest on Sunday, May 17, featuring readings of new theatrical works selected by a local readers' panel.
The event, presented in collaboration with the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford and the Jewish Plays Project, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the theater on 244Park Road. A dessert reception will begin at 6 p.m.
Organizers said the Hartford Community Readers Panel selected three finalists for this year’s competition: “Flatbush Lysistrata” by Lila Rachel Becker of Washington, D.C.; “Havurah” by Margot Connolly of Brooklyn, New York; and “SHURA: The Mission of Identifying Life” by Roee Joseph of Tel Aviv, Israel.
Audience members will watch readings of excerpts from each play before voting on which work should advance to the finals in New York.
Organizers described the format as “play reading meets American Idol.”
Tickets are priced at $10, plus a service fee.
The Jewish Plays Project develops and promotes new theatrical works exploring contemporary Jewish identity, while Charter Oak Cultural Center is a Hartford-based multicultural arts organization focused on social justice through the arts.
Playhouse on Park is operated by Playhouse Theatre Group Inc. and produces professional theater performances for Greater Hartford audiences.
