What's In A Name? Student Reveals Secrets Of West Hartford's School Names

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A Hall High School student has completed a research project examining the history behind the names of all 16 schools in the West Hartford Public Schools system as part of the town’s America 250 initiative.

The project, titled “History of West Hartford’s Public School Names,” was led by Ethan Zimmer, a Hall High student serving as student chair and lead researcher for the America 250 West Hartford School Names Project.

According to project materials, the effort was created in recognition of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and aims to highlight the people, places, and historical themes represented in the names of West Hartford schools.

Zimmer said the project explores how the schools’ names were chosen and the significance of the individuals and landmarks they commemorate.

The document notes that many schools were named after former educators, local leaders, and community members, while others recognize geographical landmarks, Connecticut history, and notable New England figures.

Organizers said the project is intended to help residents better understand the town’s educational and civic history and encourage appreciation for the stories connected to the school system.
