WEST HARTFORD, CT — The holiday weekend's rainy weather claimed the annual West Hartford Memorial Day Parade.
West Hartford officials announced the cancellation of the town’s annual Memorial Day Parade because of expected rain Monday morning, according to an announcement released Sunday afternoon.
Town officials said the parade, traditionally held on Memorial Day morning, does not have a rain date and is canceled if weather conditions are unfavorable.
The Memorial Day ceremony honoring military service members who died while serving the United States will still take place at 11 a.m. Monday inside the West Hartford Town Hall auditorium at 50 S. Main St.
Retired Marine Corps Capt. Conor Tracy of West Hartford is scheduled to serve as grand marshal and keynote speaker for the ceremony.
Tracy, a West Hartford native, grew up in the Webster Hill neighborhood and graduated from Conard High School in 1996 before attending Colgate University, where he played collegiate lacrosse.
According to town officials, Tracy joined the Marine Corps Platoon Leader Course while in college and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 2000.
After completing officer training and Amphibious Assault Vehicle school, he was stationed with the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
In 2003, Tracy deployed to Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of Task Force Tarawa.
He later served as an instructor in leadership and tactics at The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, before leaving the Marine Corps in 2006 with the rank of captain.
After returning to West Hartford, Tracy earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut School of Business and later joined United Technologies.
He currently serves as vice president and general manager of Pratt & Whitney’s Hot Section Module Center in East Hartford.
Town officials said Tracy and his wife, Elizabeth, returned to West Hartford in 2006 and are raising their three children in town.
