WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford will celebrate Juneteenth with a new month-long series of live performances, spoken word presentations and community gatherings at Blue Back Square throughout June.
The event series, called Jubilation Thursdays, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and features local musicians, spoken-word artists, vendors and community activities.
The first event is on Thursday, June 4.
Juneteenth (a blend of "June" and "nineteenth") is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on June 19.
It commemorates the effective end of slavery in the country, marking the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure all enslaved people were finally freed.
Organizers said the program replaces the town's traditional one-day Juneteenth celebration with a series of weekly events.
"This year, we're shifting from our traditional one-day celebration to Jubilation Thursdays — a month-long concert series happening each Thursday in June at Blue Back Square," organizers said in promotional materials announcing the event.
The series opens June 4 with spoken-word artist Tob31Sol and a headline performance by Bap Pack.
On June 11, the School of Rock Neo Soul Band will serve as the opening act, followed by a performance from singer Nekita Waller.
The June 18 event will feature the School of Rock House Band performing R&B music, spoken-word performers Sugar & Spice, and a headline performance by A. Marquis, also known as Antonio M. Kershaw.
DJ B-EZ will perform at each event, while former news anchor Alleah Red will serve as the weekly emcee.
Organizers said the expanded format is intended to create additional opportunities to celebrate Black culture, support local businesses, and bring residents together throughout the month.
"We're inviting residents, businesses, and community partners to help bring Jubilation Thursdays to life," organizers said. "Your support helps us uplift Black artists, support local businesses, and create spaces for our community to come together and celebrate."
Organizers are also seeking community support and donations for the event series. Contributions will be matched through Sustainable CT's Patronicity crowdfunding platform.
Jubilation Thursdays will be held in Blue Back Square and are open to the public.
