WEST HARTFORD, CT — A kitchen fire at a four-story apartment building on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford was quickly contained Saturday evening after the building's sprinkler system activated, limiting the damage and preventing injuries, fire officials said.
The West Hartford Fire Department responded to 900 Farmington Ave. at about 7:52 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, after receiving reports of a structure fire.
According to the WHFD, when firefighters arrived, they found alarms sounding, sprinklers activated, and smoke coming from the building's third floor.
The first-arriving crews determined that the fire was confined to the kitchen of a third-floor apartment and had already been extinguished by the building's automatic sprinkler system, the WHFD reported.
Firefighters confirmed that the fire did not extend to other parts of the building.
The fire caused damage to the apartment's kitchen, while smoke and water damage elsewhere in the building displaced 12 residents.
No civilians or firefighters were injured.
The American Red Cross said it is assisting the displaced residents by providing emergency aid and helping meet their immediate needs.
Volunteers also distributed recovery envelopes containing information about cleanup, replacing damaged belongings, and contacting important agencies, along with comfort kits that include personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant and shaving supplies.
The affected residents will work with Red Cross caseworkers in the coming days to develop longer-term recovery plans.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal's Office.
WHFD Deputy Chief Adam Pacheco said the fire department appreciates the assistance provided at the scene by the West Hartford Police Department, American Medical Response, the American Red Cross, and the West Hartford Building Department.
