WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford police and fire officials are reminding residents that nearly all fireworks are illegal in Connecticut as Independence Day approaches.
They are warning that violations can result in criminal charges and emphasizing the dangers posed by consumer fireworks.
In a public safety alert issued Thursday, July 2, the town noted that Connecticut General Statutes prohibit the sale, possession with intent to sell, use or detonation of fireworks.
West Hartford also prohibits the use of fireworks on property owned by the West Hartford Parks and Recreation Department under its local ordinances.
Officials said violations of state law and local ordinances may result in criminal charges, including fines and possible jail time.
The town cautioned that novelty items that emit a flame or become airborne are also illegal and can cause serious injuries, house fires, grass fires, and fatalities.
Under Connecticut law, non-explosive, non-aerial sparklers and fountains are exceptions and may be sold to and used only by individuals aged 16 and older. Officials noted that anyone using these legal devices is responsible for any injuries or property damage that result.
Residents are also being asked to consider the impact fireworks can have on neighbors, particularly young children, pets, and others who may be startled by loud noises.
The town also urged residents to follow manufacturer instructions when using legal sparklers, noting that the metal rods become extremely hot and can cause severe burns.
Officials recommend keeping sparklers at least 30 feet from people and structures, never allowing children to handle them, using them only outdoors, lighting each device only once, and keeping a bucket of water nearby to extinguish them immediately after use.
The West Hartford fire and police departments encouraged residents to celebrate Independence Day by attending fireworks displays conducted by Connecticut-licensed pyrotechnicians at state-approved locations.
"Our commitment to fire prevention and community safety includes providing information that may help prevent fires and injuries," town officials said.
Anyone found possessing or using illegal fireworks is subject to arrest, according to the town. Fireworks-related complaints should be reported to the West Hartford Police Department at 860-523-5203.
