Major Road Project Begins This Week Across 4 Area Towns

The DOT will mill and pave a busy section of roadway, with overnight lane closures in New Britain, Newington, Farmington and West Hartford.

Motorists traveling along Route 71 in four area towns should expect overnight lane closures beginning Thursday, July 9, as the state Department of Transportation starts a resurfacing project spanning portions of New Britain, Newington, Farmington and West Hartford.

The project will improve a 0.88-mile stretch of Route 71 (New Britain Avenue) from the southbound access ramp to Route 9 to South Road.

Construction will be completed in two phases:

Work is scheduled to take place from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, according to the DOT.

During construction, motorists can expect lane closures along Route 71 within the project limits.

Traffic control personnel and temporary signage will direct vehicles safely through the work zone.

The DOT said the construction schedule may be modified or extended because of weather or other unforeseen conditions.

Drivers are urged to slow down, remain alert for workers and equipment, and use caution when traveling through the construction area during overnight hours.
