WEST HARTFORD, CT — A GreenDrop donation site previously allowed on a temporary basis at a West Hartford shopping plaza is seeking town approval for a more permanent permit to operate.
The West Hartford Town Plan and Zoning Commission voted unanimously Aug. 3 to schedule a public hearing on GreenDrop's special use permit application for 176 Newington Road.
The hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9 during the commission's regular meeting.
GreenDrop is seeking permission to place an approximately 358-square-foot mobile donation trailer on an existing undeveloped pad site within the shopping plaza.
The commission previously approved the use through a temporary special use permit in January 2024, with the temporary drop site beginning operation last year.
Commissioners voted 5-0 to advance the latest application to a public hearing.
GreenDrop operates staffed, drive-up donation locations that collect gently used clothing, shoes, and household goods on behalf of charitable organizations.
The company, based in Bensalem, Pa., is a for-profit professional fundraising company that accepts donations on behalf of nonprofit partners, including the American Red Cross and Purple Heart Foundation.
Donated merchandise is typically sold through secondhand retail operations, with proceeds benefiting participating charities.
The West Hartford site is located in the shopping plaza at 176 Newington Road, near Dollar Tree and Crazy Bruce's Liquors.
The donation location operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Sept. 9 public hearing will allow commissioners to review the special use permit application and receive public comment before deciding whether to approve the proposed trailer.
