West Hartford Adds 3 Food Scrap Drop-Off Sites

WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford has expanded its food scrap collection program with three new drop-off locations after residents diverted more than 93 tons of food waste from the trash over the past year.

The town said Wednesday that more than 1,640 residents have downloaded the MetroKey app, which provides access to food scrap collection bins around West Hartford.

The three newest collection locations are:

• Wolcott Park, at the Chatfield Drive entrance.
• Beachland Park, 847 South Quaker Lane.
• Sterling Field, 836 Flatbush Ave.

The additions bring the number of food scrap drop-off locations in West Hartford to 11.

Food scrap collection is intended to keep organic material out of the municipal waste stream. Instead of being thrown away with household trash, collected scraps can be diverted for processing into compost or other beneficial uses.

Town officials are encouraging residents to continue participating in the program following the diversion of more than 93 tons during the past year.
