WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford's Community Emergency Response Team is marking five years since its reestablishment as the town recognizes National CERT Week.
The West Hartford Town Council Sept. 8 issued a proclamation declaring Sept. 20-26, 2026, as National Community Emergency Response Team Week in town, according to West Hartford CERT.
The recognition coincides with the 40th anniversary of the national CERT program and the fifth anniversary of West Hartford's re-established program.
Since 2021, West Hartford CERT said it has trained 387 residents in emergency preparedness and disaster response. Volunteers have contributed more than 14,000 hours of service during that period.
CERT volunteers have assisted with COVID-19 response efforts, emergency scenes and shelter operations, as well as the local food pantry, community events, public education programs and other public safety initiatives.
The program trains residents to assist their communities during emergencies and disasters, including situations in which professional first responders may need additional support.
West Hartford CERT said the national observance is also an opportunity to encourage residents to learn about emergency preparedness and ways they can help their neighbors during emergencies.
"Thank you to all of our CERT volunteers for your time, dedication, and service to West Hartford!" the organization said.
