Free Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Is Saturday In West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford residents looking to safely dispose of household chemicals and other hazardous materials can take advantage of a free collection event Saturday.

The Metropolitan District will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Hartford Public Works Garage, 17 Brixton St.

The collection is free and open to residents of MDC member communities.

Residents should keep hazardous waste in its original containers, place the containers in a box, and bring them to the collection site.

Participants should also bring identification.

The entrance to the collection area will be at the end of Oakwood Avenue, just past Brixton Street, and signs will direct motorists to the site.

Typical materials accepted at household hazardous waste collections include kitchen cleaners, garage and workshop chemicals, yard insecticides and hobby solvents.

Officials offered several reminders for residents planning to attend:

• Do not mix different products.
• Do not smoke inside vehicles or near the collection area.
• Be prepared for a wait of between five and 30 minutes.
• Keep waste in its original containers and place the containers in a box.
• Bring identification.

West Hartford residents may also bring eligible household hazardous waste to other MDC collection events held throughout the region.
