WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford residents can safely dispose of sensitive documents during a free residential paper shredding event Saturday, Oct. 24, at the West Hartford Department of Public Works facility.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, or until the shredding truck reaches capacity, at the side entrance of 17 Brixton St.

The service, provided by Infoshred LLC, is available exclusively to West Hartford residents, who must bring identification showing proof of residency. Commercial businesses are not eligible to participate.

Residents may bring up to two standard copy paper boxes, approximately 9 by 11 by 18 inches each, or the equivalent amount of confidential documents.

Town officials are asking participants to bring only sensitive documents requiring secure disposal.

Junk mail, envelopes, and other nonsensitive paper should be separated beforehand and placed in residents' curbside blue recycling barrels. Plastic bags will not be accepted.

Infoshred will shred documents on-site before processing the material again at its secure facility. The shredded paper is recycled into products such as tissue paper, paper towels, and dental bibs.

The town will also collect nonperishable food donations during the event to help stock the shelves of the local food pantry.

Residents should enter the facility from Oakwood Avenue.

Those traveling from New Park Road should turn onto Oakwood Avenue and look for the Department of Public Works side entrance just past Brixton Street. Signs will direct motorists to the shredding location.

Officials said the event is typically well attended and will end early if the truck fills before noon.
