WEST HARTFORD, CT — Visitors using Memorial Garage in West Hartford Center should expect temporary changes when traveling between parking levels as the town begins the next phase of its escalator modernization project.
The Town of West Hartford announced that work began Tuesday, Oct. 20, on four escalators connecting the first, second, and third floors of Memorial Garage.
The project is expected to take approximately 27 weeks, during which all four escalators will be unavailable to the public.
The work follows improvements to the escalators connecting the garage's lower level and first floor, which reopened Sept. 21.
According to town officials, the latest phase will replace and modernize major mechanical and electrical components while incorporating safety and operational improvements.
The upgrades are intended to improve the escalators' long-term reliability and efficiency.
Escalators Closed During Construction
The following escalators are out of service:
All four escalators will remain closed throughout the construction period.
However, the town said other ways of accessing the garage's parking levels will remain available.
The newly modernized escalators connecting the lower level and first floor will continue operating.
Elevators and adjacent stairwells will also remain open and will not be affected by the construction.
Temporary barricades and signs will be installed around the work areas to protect pedestrians and direct visitors through the garage.
Town officials are encouraging motorists and pedestrians to allow additional time when moving between levels.
Webster Walk Elevator Project Continues
The town also provided an update on the ongoing elevator modernization project at Webster Walk.
According to officials, construction is progressing, and the elevator is expected to return to service in early December.
The reopening remains dependent on completion of the remaining work and required inspections.
The Memorial Garage and Webster Walk projects are part of West Hartford's broader effort to modernize elevators and escalators in its public parking facilities.
Town officials said the improvements are intended to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall condition of municipal parking infrastructure.
The town thanked residents, visitors, businesses, and employees for their patience during the construction.
