WEST HARTFORD, CT — After a slight delay over the summer, the town's zoning board has unanimously approved plans to expand Fairview Cemetery.

The West Hartford Plan & Zoning Commission's 4-0 vote to approve expansion was Aug. 8 and it came about a month after the PZC delayed action in July on the proposal.

West Hartford's public works department plans to expand the cemetery, located at 200 Whitman Ave., by 360 grave sites and it needed a special permit from the PZC to do so.

On July 6, the PZC continued the public hearing on the proposal to August, decling to act and citing multiple questions on the proposal.

Those questions were answered earlier this month and, now, the town can proceed with the project.

The PZC had sought added details about specific plans for the site, including traffic patterns, tree plantings and other landscaping as well as how to better screen the new gravesites from public view.

Expanding the 52-acre cemetery was deemed necessary to handle added demand for plots.
