WEST HARTFORD, CT — Christmas brings a lot of joy, togetherness and calories.

And it also brings with it a lot of waste, from cardboard boxes to nearly-dead Christmas trees.

Starting Tuesday, Dec. 26, West Hartford will have special collection events for those old cardboard boxes as well as electronic waste as favorite items are replaced with newer ones.

A cardboard and e-waste collection will be held for West Hartford residents only on Tuesday, Dec. 26; Wednesday, Dec. 27; and Thursday, Dec. 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the West Hartford Yard Waste and Recycling Center, 25 Brixton St.

Residents should be aware the recycling event will be canceled in inclement weather on the day prior or on the day of the recycling event.

This is because local public works crews would be needed to plow and keep roads safe.

No commercial waste is permitted.

This event is for cardboard and electronics only. All other disposal of recyclable items requires an annual permit.

The town has a few guidelines for the collections:

• Break down and fold cardboard boxes flat.

• Empty boxes of all Styrofoam, plastic bags, and plastic film. Discard at home. Styrofoam is trash.

• E-waste includes phones, cameras, electric cords, TVs, computers, hair dryers, toasters, and more.

Holiday string lights are e-waste and will be collected and they are not allowed in curbside recycling barrels.

No air conditioners, dehumidifiers, mini-refrigerators, or any product that contains Freon.

Cardboard is recycled into new, much-needed products like boxes and tissue paper.

"Thank you for helping the Town meet its goals to reduce trash and increase recycling," wrote the Town of West Hartford.

Christmas tree collection

Meanwhile, the town is also making arrangements to collect those old Christmas trees before they dry out and become an even greater fire hazard.

Public works will make two town-wide sweeps to pick up Christmas trees. The collection runs from Tuesday, Jan. 2, to Friday, Jan. 12, 2024.
