The next generation of Connecticut choreographers will premiere original works on stage at the Herbert & Evelyn Gilman Theater at the Mandell JCC in West Hartford during two performances: Saturday, January 25, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 26, at 2 p.m. The Piece That Fits is the theme of this concert of modern danceworks, conceived and performed by members of Figments: a preprofessional, nonprofit dance ensemble composed of 17 talented young dancers from throughout central and eastern Connecticut.

Appropriate for all ages, this collection of dances is designed to inspire audiences while showcasing this unique program, which places the choreography reigns in the hands of teens who have long studied dance and who have successfully auditioned into this tight-knit troupe. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.

Founded in 1993 by director Heidi Klecak, Figments Youth Dance Ensemble (FYDE) brings dancers from across Connecticut together to collaborate and share their passion for creative movement. Company members, ages 10 to 18, rehearse at Trinity College in Hartford from September through January in preparation for this annual performance, which features original small group and full ensemble pieces. The students are mentored by Klecak and assistant director Haley Zdebski Fabrycki during their choreography process, are encouraged to explore movement invention through improvisation and are taught performance skills.
