WEST HARTFORD, CT — Motorcyclists looking to turn West Hartford's town center into their own personal race track might want to think twice.

West Hartford police this week issued a reminder as to why. You might lose your bike.

According to a statement issued Thursday, police on Wednesday towed away several motorcycles and charged the operators after they were seen traveling recklessly on Farmington Avenue from Prospect Avenue.

Police said an officer on patrol at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday observed the motorcyclists traveling at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out traffic and not obeying traffic control signals.

Eventually, police said, the motorcycles in question and the operators were charged for numerous motor vehicle charges.

Among the charges: failure to maintain proper lane; failure to obe traffic control signals; reckless driving; operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license; operating a motor vehicle in violation of license classification; operating a motor vehicle without a license; misuse of plates; operating an unregistered motor vehicle; and failure to have insurance.

In addition, the bikes were loaded on a flatbed truck and taken away, with police posting an image of the operation on social media.

Police said the situation could have been worse and urged the community to keep an eye out on roads and report any issues.

"We value the safety of our motorists and pedestrians and are thankful that there were no injuries stemming from these reckless acts," police wrote. "If you witness any similar activity, please notify the police department immediately."
