High School Tennis Court Funding Before West Hartford Council

The town's top elected body next week is expected to discuss and, possibly, vote on added funding for new courts at Hall and Conard.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Efforts to build new tennis courts at both of the town's high schools could receive a boost next week as the West Hartford Town Council is expected to decide an appropriation to fund them.

The council — which meets Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in West Hartford Town Hall — is expected to discuss and, possibly, vote on an ordinance to appropriate up to $495,000 to fund new tennis courts at both Hall High School and Conard High School.

The ordinance, specifically, states that dollar amount be appropriated into the town's capital improvement fund for the 2022-23 fiscal year.

It also would allow the town to issue bonds in that amount to fund the appropriation.

Those funds will supplement a $3 million State Bond Commission appropriation approved March 31 for the project, which entails 12 new courts being built at each school.

Hall High School is at 975 N. Main St. and Conard High School is at 10 Beechwood Road.

The projects will include new courts, lighting, fencing, netting, landscaping and other amenities.
This is the second time of the summer the council addressed the parks.

In June, the council voted unanimously to authorize the town manager, Rick Ledwith, to formally accept those state funds and sign off on any documents required to complete the project.

The hope is to have the tennis courts complete for spring 2023, which is when the high school tennis season starts, and town officials were confident they could be done by October.

At the June meeting, it was originally stated that the full, State Bond Commission amount would fully pay for the tennis court project, but that doesn't appear to be the case now.
